Skin Cancers
Australia experiences the highest incidence of skin cancers in the world. Our beautiful beaches, seaside holiday resorts with golden sunshine have attracted both local and overseas holiday makers to sun exposed activities. Our broken down ozone layer directly above Australia has led to an exceedingly high level of ultraviolet rays landing on our skin. With majority Australians having fair skin which are more susceptible to ultraviolet damage, the skin cancer problem is increasing. Much has been done to educate the general public about the damaging effects of the sun and sun protection measures such as the "Slip, Slop, Slap" program. This has been quite successful in educating our young but sadly, there are still many who are chronically in the sun...and they love it!
Skin cancers are broadly calssified into 2 main categories, namely melanoma skin cancers and non-melanoma skin cancers.
In the non-melanoma skin cancer group, there are the Squamous Cell Carcinomas (which are more dangerous) and the Basal Cell Carcinomas (which are the most common and least dangerous). These are usually due to cumulative ultraviolet damage to the skin over many years.
Melanomas are the most dangerous of the skin cancers and has to be managed quickly and carefully. They may arise from an abnormal mole or in normal skin. There is often a history of a severe sunburn episode in the past (may be 5-10 years ago).
Please look at the different cancers in subheadings for more detail.
