Cosmetic Medicine
The skins natural response to excessive sunlight is to become thicker in order to protect the layers of skin. A bit like building a brick wall. This in turn gives us dul tired and aging skin.
Microdermabrasion removes dead surface skin cells and has a cellular turnover at the dermis and epidermis levels. There are two kinds of Microdermabrasion crystals and crystaless.
The crystals are delivered through a handpiece to the skin. The crystaless heads are made up if diamond chips in the tip. Both kinds leave the skin smooth and fresh while promoting new collagen growth.
As part of a whole skin rejuvenation process, Microdermabrasion is used in conjunction with IPL, Dermal Fillers and Botox to achieve maximum rejuvenation.
On a medical side, Microdermabrasion is used to assist in the treatment of acne and acne scarring. Microdermabrasion breaks down the stratum corneum alleviating the congestion which causes bacteria to build up. This is often used in conjunction with glycolic acid peels in a series of alternating treatments for acne. Microdermabrasion is also used to maximize the effect of Photodynamic Photorejuvenation Treatment (see attached procedure) by removing the dead stratum corneum prior to the application of ALA. This is a one-off treatment.
Best results are usually achieved with a course of six treatments provided weekly or fortnightly depending on what problem you are treating. This is a non invasive treatment and down time can be anything from 0-4 hours. Monthly maintenance treatments enable you to keep the acne under control and your fresh younger looking skin bright and smooth with increased elasticity.
Microdermabrasion has been utilized in the last decade for exfoliation of the skin and stimulating collagen production to iron out find wrinkles. New research has shown that a gentle low level red light (using LED-Light emitting diode) that has been used for photodynamic therapy in skin cancer treatment is now also used for skin regeneration. The 635nm red light penetrates into the dermis to cause new collagen production and calms down inflammatory skin condition.
We use Microdermabrasion also for Acne and Acne pigmentation. When combines with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), we can achieve both elimination of active acne lesions and break down the resistant hyperpigmented marks.
